Jypsi - "Mister Officer"

"Mister Officer" represents the third chance at radio success for family band Jypsi.  Insanely talented musicians, the quartet hopes to finally break through at country radio thinking that maybe the third time's the charm.  Is there enough here to predict a hit?

Jypsi's career so far has been a case of "try, try again." Their first single, "Love Is a Drug," was pulled before it charted, and "I Don't Love You Like That," despite a #46 debut, barely cracked the top 40. Even so, Jypsi has gotten its debut album out digitally, and this three-sisters-and-a-brother group is now on its third single; no doubt, Arista Nashville believes in this quartet, and for good reason.

"Mister Officer" isn't a terribly substantial song, but it's hard to call this anything less than a solid piece of ear candy. The lyrics are mainly a one-sided conversation with a police officer: it turns out that she wasn't speeding because she was in a hurry or anything, she just got into a good mood and wasn't paying attention to how fast she was going because she had the music turned up so loud. It's an interesting and rather cute premise; although Lillie Mae Rische's vocals are a bit on the thin side, she gives a youthful, energetic performance that helps sell the song. Of course, it helps that it has that same sort of heavy groove that would be perfect for, well, driving down the road with the top down and speakers blaring, just like she was.

So far, it seems like all the pieces are in place for Jypsi. They have a distinct, diverse sound and rock-solid material. Now all they need is the radio play — and with an ear-worm like this, a big radio hit shouldn't be too far away.
