Sugarland - Live On The Inside

In a short amount of time Sugarland has become one of the hottest acts in Country music.  Always a group to mix their influences from multiple sources into their music, the duo has released their first live set.  Is it any good?

Fans who have experienced a Sugarland show know that they’re more than just their popular hits as they use their stage as a showcase for more than their own music and each night they play a few ‘cover’ tunes that they really like.  A couple of those tunes, “Come On Get Higher” and “Life In A Northern Town” appeared as bonus tracks on “Love” and now, the group has created this “Live On The Inside” cd/dvd combo.  IT features a Walmart-exclusive 10 track CD  that includes hits “Stay,” “All I Want To Do” “Joey” and “Love” with six covers including “The One I Love” from REM, “Better Man” from Pearl Jam, “Sex On Fire” from Kings of Leon and “Love Shack”  from the B-52s.  Each song is given a lively arrangement and Sugarland sticks to the melody but gives the songs an acoustic and slightly ‘twangy’ arrangement.

A year ago a video of Sugarland singing “Irreplaceable” found its way onto YouTube (watch here) and the duo more than acquit themselves on this cover of the Beyoncé hit.  Very few singers could actually sing that song well and Jennifer Nettles, who is one of country music’s best female vocalists, proves that she’s not a singer but a sanger.  The B-52’s are from the same area of Georgia that Sugarland are from and it’s fun to hear this country group pay homage to the party band with “Love Shack” while also giving a beautiful acoustic rendition of “The One I Love,” the seminal hit from Georgia’s REM.

The DVD portion of this collection gives fans the complete concert from their October, 25, 2008 performance at the Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky.  It’s a 15 song set that features all of the groups hits along with album tracks like the U2-ish “Love” (a song designed to be played in arenas and stadiums), “Steve Earle,” and “Down In Mississippi (Up To No Good).”  Highlights on the video are the emotionally-packed “Stay,” a song which is also on the DVD, “All I Want To Do” and “The One I Love.”  If fans want to know what they can expect at a Sugarland concert, or maybe won’t be lucky enough to have Sugarland perform near them, then “Live On The Inside” is the perfect collection to purchase.  The DVD may be watchable over and over again but that special 10 song CD is the perfect place to get the ‘cover’ songs that Sugarland does, here as an added bonus with the DVD.

If you're one of the twenty people in America (outside of NYC) that aren't within five minutes from a Walmart you can get your own copy of this collection here or try for our giveaway of this CD here.
