Now Available: eMusic adds Classic RCA/Columbia/Sony Music Artists to Their MP3 service

Once lampooned by mainstream music fans as a download service for hipster indie music lovers, eMusic has now decidedly gone mainstream with their partnership with Sony Music to provide Sony's rich back catalog for downloads for an economical .50

Last month we featured an article that explained how Sony Music was placing much of their ‘catalog hits,’ with that catalog going back to albums released before 2007, onto the eMusic download service and whilst eMusic has had to change their download pricing scheme down to reflect the added cost of having a ‘major’ record company join their consortium of small-to-mid-size labels, the fact that not only are artists like Johnny Cash,  Kenny Chesney, Brooks & Dunn, Marty Robbins and Dolly Parton part of the eMusic canon now, but smaller or now lesser known acts like one hit wonders Bobby Pinson (now a go-to co-writer for acts like Sugarland and Toby Keith)Tommy Shane Stiner (“What If She’s An Angel”), Brad Martin (“If I Knew Better”), Tammy Cochran (“Angels In Wating”), overlooked debut releases from now popular artists like Jamey Johnson ("The Dollar"), and there are even albums like Ashley Monroe (songwriter of “Flat On The Floor”)’s oft-delayed, recently-released “Satisfied.”

The beauty of this label joining the eMusic party is that now you’re able to pick-up some albums that were long-ago relegated to the bargain bins at Best Buy and Wal-Mart or stopped being pressed altogether.   Fans of good, classic, hit songs and artists (Chet Atkins, George Jones, Tammy Wynette, et. cetera) will certainly love being able to get their favorite artists and songs for a price of about .50 cents a download, which is still quite a bargain.  The subscription services at eMusic start at 12 bucks but if you’re like us, you’re likely to want to pay the 30 bucks to get 75 added songs a month.

One thing some of you probably won’t like is the fact that some hit songs that you may want (for example most of Michael Jackson’s “Essential “ 2 CD set or Carrie Underwood’s “Some Hearts” album) are available with full-album downloads only.  Then again, the ‘cost’ to download a full-album of songs is 12 tracks but if that album, like a single-disc greatest hit collection, has 20 songs, it still only cost you the 12 tracks but if that album has less than 12 tracks, it will cost you only the amount of tracks on the Album.
