Jimmy Wayne - "I'll Be That"

After two successful singles, Jimmy Wayne seems to have returned to his status as a radio star.  This song, with hooks-a-plenty, has all the makings of a big hit but should it become a hit or should people be asking for more than another pleading love song?

Depending on your view of the state of country music you’re bound to either love or hate “I’ll Be That” (listen here), the latest single from Jimmy Wayne.  After the chart topping success of “Do You Believe Me Now” and the Top 15 success of “I Will,” Jimmy is returning to the airwaves with a tempo-filled pop-leaning ballad complete with steel guitar and violin fills (I hasten to call them fiddles) that remind fans that you’re listening to a country single.

The first single from Jimmy’s latest album (click to read review) that wasn’t produced by Dave Pahanish and Joe West, “I’ll Be That” was instead platinum producer Mark Bright (Carrie Underwood, Rascal Flatts) is behind the knobs as Jimmy sings of everything he’ll do to be the apple of the woman of his dream’s eyes.  Written by Kevin Page, Bob Regan and Jimmy, the song certainly is lyrical but like the rest of the “Do You Believe Me Now” album, the melody is just as important as the lyric for it will keep the guys interested as the ladies relate to the lyric.

While "I'll Be That" rehashes a well-worn theme, it somehow works for me, likely because of the hooky melody.  This is not to say that it will come even remotely close to being appreciated by traditionalists or those looking for new, grittier subjects.
