With a title like "Walmart Flowers," it would be easy to simply dismiss Stephen Cochran as but another small-label artist meekly trying to get a song on the charts any way they can, especially if they can use the nations largest retailer in the title. On some levels, this is probably a valid argument but if you truly get down to the core of the song, it's a harmless little ditty that is remarkably current. The vocals are sold while the lyrics, which hit songwriter Thom Shepherd with Big Vinny and Butter from Trailer Choir, find Cocharan singing about simple pleasures of people who don't have a lot of money. The moral of this story? Money isn't everything. While the theme of “Walmart Flowers” may have been said in different or even similar ways before, the country melody helps to keep the song from feeling forced.
Will the former US Marine score a big hit with "Walmart Flowers?" That remains to be seen but Stephen Cochran certainly has presented a charming, timely single that has the ability to spice up the airwaves a bit.
