Brad Paisley Leads 44th ACM Awards Nominees

The ACM Award Nominees were announced today with Brad Paisley taking home the most nominations with six. He was closely followed by Heidi Newfield who had five nominees. Jamey Johnson followed them with four nominations of his own.

Today the Academy of Country Music announced the nominees for the 44th Annual ACM Awards. This show, which is not to be confused with the fall's CMA Awards, is often more open to 'popular' artists than the CMA's are. As such there are some interesting nominations here, like the five nominations for Heidi Newfield (two for the same song of the year award which artists AND writers get), Eli Young Band being nominated for "Best New Group," and Joey & Rory managing to be included in the "Duo" award. This year the entertainer category included leading nominee Brad Paisley, who is up for six nominations, George Strait, Kenny Chesney, Keith Urban and Carrie Underwood.

Joining Paisley, Strait, Chesney, and Urban in the Top Male Vocalist category is Toby Keith while Underwood is joined by Heidi Newfield, Taylor Swift, Miranda Lambert and Lee Ann Womack in the Top Female Vocalist category. The top vocal group includes Lady Antebellum, Little Big Town, Rascal Flatts, The Lost Trailers and surprising many, the Randy Rogers Band. Joey+Rory get their first major award nomination in the Vocal Duo category as Big & Rich, Brooks & Dunn, Montgomery Gentry and Sugarland join them.

The Entertainer of the Year and the top new artists will be partially voted on by the fans, starting today. The top five vote-getting new artists from the nine artists in the New Male, New Female and New Group categories will then be placed into one category for which the members of the ACM will vote from the winner. These nominees, along with the Album of the Year nominations will be announced March 20, 2009.

In the song categories, Trace Adkins, Heidi Newfield, Jamey Johnson and Brad Paisley all scored dual nomanitons for their singles "You're Gonna Miss This," "Johnny & June," "In Color" and "Waitin' On A Woman." The songwriters for all of these songs are up for the awards as well as the artists. Miranda Lambert's "Gunpowder & Lead" rounds out the "Single of the Year" category while George Strait's "I Saw God Today" rounds out the "Song Of The Year."
