Top 40 Singles of 2008: Todd O'Neill - "Can I Come Over Tonight" (#31)

Some of the best singles of the year are also songs that rarely got a chance at radio. Hammond, LA Native Todd O'Neill's "Can I Come Over Tonight" is one of them and it was good enough to land at 31 on Roughstock's year-end best-of 2008 list.

Some of the best singles of the year are also songs that rarely got a chance at radio.  One of those singles is from Hammond, Louisiana native Todd O'Neill.  While radio didn't care, our editorial team did and chose "Can I Come Over Tonight" as our 31st favorite single of the year.

The first thing one notices when listening to Todd O'Neill is the soul that comes out of people from the Delta of both Louisiana and Mississippi.  Signed to small label Aria Records Nashville, O'Neill isn't quite the household name that he should be but that doesn't stop him from singing fun and romantic tracks on his debut album "Real Life."  Released earlier this year, "Can I Come Over Tonight" is an R&B-soaked country ballad that rivals anything you'll hear from Blake Shelton or Keith Urban.  The lyrics find a man thinking and discussing about how his horrible day would be made much, much better if he could just be in the arms of someone he loves.  He doesn't want to do anything bad but he has felt so bad that just being in the presence of her will make him feel better.  While some will surmise that he wants to 'get it on' with her, O'Neill promises that there are no 'bad intentions' on his mind.  This is the kind of song that should've kick-started his career to a wider audience.  Hopefully in 2009 and beyond O'Neill manages to score a hit or two as Nashville always has room for great vocalists.
