With a voice as fresh as greens picked from a garden, Joey Martin is a refreshing breath of fresh air for contemporary country music. She is ½ of the husband-wife team of Joey+Rory. Recently signed to Sugar Hill/Vanguard Records, Joey+Rory co-wrote this song and sang it on CMT’s “Can You Duet,” a show which they placed third. Rory is barely audible harmony wise but he’s completely part of the duo in the sense that he’s one of Nashville’s most gifted songwriters (Crystal Shawanda’s “You Can Let Go” is but one recent example).
“Cheater, Cheater” is an honest-to-god pure country song that jumps out of the speakers. With lyrics that find Joey as the woman who’s been cheated on asking her man “Cheater, Cheater, where did you meet that ho?” It’s three minutes of tempo and while it remains to be seen whether radio will embrace this truly country duo, songs like “Cheater, Cheater” are what makes country music what it is: honest, true to life music.
Well Done.
